Dr. Stokes founded a cancer start-up, Practical Biotechnology, in 2018. As a winner of the 2018 international ‘Freedom From Cancer’ Startup Challenge, with licensed intellectual property from UCLA, Practical Biotechnology has laid a compelling foundation for the development of therapies in lung and breast cancer.Cases of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have some of the poorest outcomes for patients due to acquired tumor resistance to chemotherapy. Conventional courses of anti-cancer treatments lead to the emergence of cancer stem cells (CSC), which help the tumor maintain itself and develop resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. Practical Biotechnology is developing therapeutic candidates to kill cancer stem cells and reverse tumor chemotherapy resistance in NSCLC, with a low side effect profile.
